Chicken Thighs Stroganoff Recipe

Think of everything you love about the classic beef stroganoff. Well, Chicken Stroganoff is all that, except it is made with chicken. Boneless and skinless thighs are used instead of beef. One great advantage of using chicken thighs is that you can brown them really beautifully.

Making home made dinners does not have to be very complicated. This is a dish you can make entirely from scratch using simple ingredients you can get from your local grocery store. To make things simple, use whole chicken pieces instead of chopping them up.

Chicken stroganoff is a dish I make for my family often and they love it. When I was growing up, we regularly visited grandma during the holidays. She would make this dish for us, and honestly, that’s what made me look forward to each visit.

My mother, on the other hand, would only make it when she wanted to prepare something easy but delicious.

Now that I have a family, I keep the culture going by cooking Chicken stroganoff following grandma’s recipe. I have also taught my children our traditions. Nana advised me to season the thighs with just salt, pepper and a little amount of garlic to prevent a ton of flavor since it is all about the stroganoff Sauce.

What Does Stroganoff Taste Like?

Stroganoff sauce is a sour cream gravy that is prepared with either beef or chicken. in our case we are using chicken instead of beef. Flour is added to thicken the chicken broth. The sauce has a mustard flavor to it.

Mushrooms are also added to the sauce. To add to the taste, there is a beautiful contrast between the soft brown creamy color of the sauce and well seared golden-brown chicken thighs

What Is Chicken Stroganoff Sauce Made Of?

When serving the chicken breasts, there is no amount of sauce that can be said is enough. A great stroganoff sauce is very important when serving chicken stroganoff. Chicken stroganoff is not just an ordinary mushroom sauce.

However, it is a delicious blend made of spices, mustard and sour cream which makes it stand alone gravy. To have a beautiful start for a delicious full-flavored chicken stroganoff gravy, well browned mushrooms are combined with crispy bits that are left in the pan when searing the chicken.

Seared chicken is then added to the pan and left to simmer for a few minutes. This is done to let the chicken to cook completely and thicken the sauce with the brown chicken coating.

What Can You Use Instead Of Sour Cream In Stroganoff?

Sour cream is an important ingredient to add to the stroganoff gravy for adding the flavor. However, if you do not want to use sour cream, it is advisable to stick to dairy products that will and tang and richness to the sauce.

A richer alternative to sour sauce is the crème Fraiche which is stirred into the and dolloped on the top to make it more effective. To add a perfect acidic balance that gives the stroganoff sauce a slightly more healthful feel, you can use Greek yogurt.

Another ingredient to use in place of sour cream is cream cheese. Cream cheese adds a tangy bite to the stroganoff sauce and is perfect for melting into the sauce.

 

What Do You Eat With Stroganoff?

The sauce is so good on its own and the chicken in the stroganoff sauce is so flavorful and very tender. Most people serve chicken stroganoff with noodles or pasta. However, anything that can be used to slop up the fabulous stroganoff sauce such as mashed potato, or polenta can be used.

You can also use brad in order to soak up all the sauce. Cauliflower mash or cauliflower rice can be used for those who want a low carb alternative. You can also serve the chicken stroganoff with a side of simple salads like cabbage salad of kale salad. Fresh herbs such as thyme, sage and tarragon are also used to serve.

Ingredients

  • 6-8 pieces Chicken Thighs Boneless skinless
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 piece Onion Chopped
  • 1 clove Garlic Chopped
  • 2 cups Cremini Mushrooms sliced
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 1 tbsp All Purpose Flour
  • 1 cup Chicken Broth
  • 1/2 cup White Wine
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Dijon Mustard
  • 2/3 cup Heavy Cream
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Fresh Herbs we used thyme, sage and tarragon

Instructions

  1. Ensure you season your chicken thighs with salt and pepper.

  2. Then, heat a non-stick, or a well-seasoned skillet to medium or high.

  3. Pour some olive oil and once it gets hot, add the chicken thighs. Sear them for about 5 minutes or until golden brown. Then remove from the skillet and reserve them in a bowl.

  4. Place the skillet back on the stove, and add a little more olive oil if needed. Next add the onions and garlic. Cook for about 7 minutes.

  5. Next add the cremini mushrooms and cook till browned, about 6 minutes.

  6. Move the mixture to the sides of the skillet, and add the butter and flour. Mix until creamy, about 3 minutes.

  7. Lastly, add the chicken broth, the white wine, Worcestershire Sauce, Dijon mustard, heavy cream, salt and pepper.

  8. Return the thighs to the skillet and cook for 10 minutes or until the sauce thickens and is creamy.

  9. Serve with fresh herbs.
