Air Fryer Chicken Fried Steak Recipe

Last Updated: Mar 31, 2025

When people hear a recipe like air fryer chicken fried steak, they are usually confused. Most people have never heard of this let alone actually tried it. My friends were the same way.

One day I invited him over to have dinner with my family and I made this for him. After trying it out, he told me that he wished he knew about this earlier. If you are like my friend and never had this before, you will also wish you had known about this much earlier.

Can you cook steak in an air fryer?

You most certainly can! Heck, there are even some air fryers that have specific instructions included for making steak.

What kind of meat is chicken steak?

Don't worry, I also was confused when I first heard this. To make it simpler to understand, there is no chicken involved; only cows. There are a bunch of different names for this such as flatiron steak, chuck, and chicken steak.

All you really need to know though is that the chicken steak is cut from the shoulder of the cow and there is no chicken involved whatsoever.

What's the difference between chicken fried and country fried steak?

There are two subtle factors the differentiate the two: the color of the gravy and the coating.

For the gravy, chicken fried steak is covered white gravy with some peppers while country fried steak is covered in brown gravy. As with the coating, chicken fried steak has a more crisp texture to it than country fried steak.

It may not seem like much, but those two things are what make them different.

What makes a good air fryer chicken fried steak recipe?

For one, it's fried food. Fried food always has great taste if done right. But what makes the recipe even more special is that since it's using an air fryer, there will be less fat than using a regular fryer.

And of course, since you are using an air fryer, this can be prepared in a short amount of time.

But what really brings this recipe together is the gravy. I'm a big fan of gravy and I think it goes great with a lot of things. But with the crispy texture of the chicken steak paired with gravy, it makes the whole thing taste like heaven in your mouth.
