Pit Boss Prime Rib

How to smoke prime rib on Pitboss pellet grill

Begin by preheating your Pitboss Pellet Grill to around 250°F and seasoning the prime rib.

Place the prime rib on the grates. Close the lid and smoke the prime rib for about 2-3 hours, or until the internal temperature reaches about 130°F.

Once the prime rib has reached temperature, increase the heat of the Pitboss Pellet Grill to 400°F and continue to cook for several minutes until internal temperature reaches 140°F.

After the cooking time is complete, remove the prime rib from the Pitboss Pellet Grill and let it rest for 15-20 minutes.

What size prime rib should I get

When it comes to smoking prime rib roast on your Pit Boss, the size of the roast you purchase is going to be determined by how many people you plan to feed. A good rule of thumb is to buy 1 pound of meat for every person you are expecting at your gathering. If you want to make sure there are leftovers, then you should consider purchasing extra meat.

Preparing prime rib for smoking

Once you have your prime rib, you’ll need to prepare it for the grill. Start by trimming off any excess fat and silver skin from the meat, then season it with your favorite rub and let it rest in the refrigerator for at least an hour.

The seasoning

To achieve the best results, it’s important to season the meat properly before smoking. The most popular seasonings for prime rib on a Pit Boss include kosher salt, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper.

Start by rubbing the prime rib all over with garlic powder and onion powder. Then add smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Once the seasonings are applied, let the prime rib rest in the refrigerator for at least an hour before smoking. This will allow the seasonings to really penetrate the meat.

Ideal temperature for smoking prime rib

The ideal temperature for smoking a prime rib is 250°F. This low, slow temperature helps to break down the connective tissue in the roast while preserving its moisture. Do not let the internal temperature of the prime rib reach over 145°F which is medium doneness.

What temperature is a prime rib done

For a medium-rare prime rib roast, the temperature should be 130-135°F when checked with an instant-read thermometer. If you prefer your meat more done, cook it to 140-145°F. If you’re looking for a rare prime rib, take it out of the oven at 120-125°F.

Remember that the internal temperature of the roast will continue to rise while it rests, so take it out of the oven a few degrees before your desired level of doneness. For accurate results, make sure to insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the roast without touching bone.

How long does it take to smoke a prime rib

Depending on the size of the roast and your preferred doneness, it can take anywhere from 2-3 hours to smoke a prime rib on a Pit Boss smoker. The key is to make sure that the internal temperature of the roast reaches an optimal 140ºF.

To ensure that, you’ll want to set your smoker to 225-250ºF and use either hickory or oak wood chips. When using a Pit Boss smoker, you’ll need to keep an eye on the temperature and add wood chips as necessary.

How to carve

Begin by allowing the roast to rest for 30 minutes before slicing. Then, use a long and sharp carving knife to cut slices that are 1/4 inch thick. Make sure to use a sawing motion when cutting and use your free hand to hold the roast steady.

Once the slices are cut, place them on a cutting board, and serve them with a side of horseradish and au jus. For an extra special touch, use a small spoon to drizzle melted butter over each slice. This will add flavor and make your roast even more delicious.

What to serve

If you’re looking for the perfect accompaniment to a delicious prime rib dinner, you’re in luck! There are many sides that pair perfectly with prime rib, from classic vegetables to unique salads, and everything in between.

For a classic meal, try roasted potatoes or mashed potatoes with garlic and herbs. For a healthier option, try grilled vegetables like asparagus or broccoli.

For a delicious salad, try a combination of greens, nuts, berries and feta cheese. If you want something more substantial, serve roasted Brussels sprouts or roasted carrots. For a unique twist, try a warm potato salad with bacon and red onions.

How to store leftovers

First, you want to make sure the prime rib is cooled to room temperature before storing it. This will help prevent any bacteria from growing on the meat.

Next, you should place the prime rib in an airtight container or covered dish. This will help keep the meat from drying out and helps prevent any odors from seeping into other foods in the refrigerator.

Finally, you should store the prime rib in the refrigerator for up to four days. If you plan on keeping the prime rib for longer, it is best to freeze it in a freezer-safe container for up to three months. By following these simple steps, you can enjoy delicious meals with your leftover prime rib for days to come!
